Why do (some) people put diamond rings in champagne glasses when they propose marriage. Where does this come from? Is there any cultural history attached to it?
I saw mr burns do it on the simpsons

I don’t know anyone who’s actually gotten a ring that way. granted a ring does look nice with all the bubbles around it but I think it’s just a marketing thing that Debeers came up with.

I don’t know, but it never seemed like a good idea to me…

Champagne/sparkling wine would be sticky; the first thing you’d need to do with your brand-new ring is get it thoroughly cleaned!

How would you get it out? Do you drink the wine and have it in your mouth? Do you drink the wine with your teeth closed so you can tip it out? Do you dump the wine over your hand and catch the ring? None of these seems to be a classy/gracious way to do it…

Stupid idea.

Most people would say, “So, you had to get your girlfriend tipsy so that she would accept the ring, huh?”

I agree with Just Tryin’ to Help. I can’t see how this would end without being awkward.

And why champagne? Why not a cup of coffee? A bowl of clam chowder? A 7-up? A pint of beer?
